Aldine ISD Students Compete in Name That Book Contest

Students read lots of books all year to prepare for the book challenge. And the winners are …

In its seventh year in Aldine ISD, Name That Book has become a staple on campuses. The districtwide academic competition exposes students to literature and motivates them to read.

Students in schools across the District read a lot this school year. They have been reading classic literature to contemporary award-winning books. The students then put their book knowledge to the test as they competed in AISD’s Name That Book (NTB) reading competition this spring.

What is the Name That Book Challenge?

The students’ read 20-30 books during the school year. The book lists are divided by Kindergarten-2nd Grade, 3rd-4th Grade, intermediate level, middle school, and high school (Grades 9-12). Students read as many of the books from their grade level list as possible.

Campuses hold preliminary competitions to determine the top campus teams. During the competitions, students will answer questions about the books they have read. Then the fun really begins. The top teams from each school battle it out to advance to the final rounds to determine who can most successfully Name That Book. The students who win their school competition for each grade will form their campus Name That Book team. Their campus Name That Book team will compete in the AISD Name That Book Finals against other schools.


Conley Elementary School

Students prepared for the contest by playing games to recognize sections and quotes from the selected books. The teams also discussed the genres of books, the personalities of the characters, and much more.

They also worked with a coach and learned how to work together as a team. The students then competed in teams to name the book based on a quote or statement and answer questions about the books.

At the 2017 contest, the elementary level had 24 teams participate at the K-2 level, while 31 teams competed in the 3-4 grade level.


Parker Intermediate School

For the second year in a row, every intermediate and middle school campus took part in the competitions. Buchanan shared that many of these students have been on a NTB team since elementary school.

New this year was the expansion to include a ninth and high school level competition. The ninth grade campuses edged out the senior campuses by taking three of the four top places in the final results.

This year’s competition was tough and included several tie-breakers.

The program strives to instill a passion for self-directed learning through reading.

Cindy Buchanan hopes this program helps turn students into avid readers. Buchanan is the program director of library services. She stated that the main goal of the annual contest is to enhance students’ experiences with books. The competitive, fun event exposes students to wonderful literature. It also helps improve their reading and comprehension skills.

The kids get competitive but the real goal of the program is to get them to read,” said Buchanan. “Whether students advance into the competition or notthey read some great titles. Some schools have an entire grade level of students who are enjoying the same storiesThis creates opportunities to talk about the books.
